I don’t know if you realize this, but Yoko Ono is ridiculously rad. At 74 years old she is still doing more to promote peace than any other famous person I can think of (regardless of what the Nobel Committee would have you believe).
Her latest project is the Imagine Peace Tower, a huge pillar of light located on an island near Reykjavik, Iceland, that will be illuminated every year from October 9th (John Lennon’s birthday) to December 8th (the day of his death).
At the base of the structure is a huge wishing well that bears the inscription “Imagine Peace” in 24 languages. Hundreds of thousands of wishes sent in from around the world for her “Wish Tree” project will also be buried at the base of the light tower.
Okay, so the Imagine Peace Tower is pretty cool on its own, but this is the most amazing part to me: Dennis Kucinich, democratic candidate for President, made a video (at left) about how rad he thinks the Imagine Peace Tower is. Seriously, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton probably don’t even give a shit.
Sure, having a black president or a woman president would be groundbreaking, but it’d also be groundbreaking– in a much deeper sense– to have a president who honestly, sincerely believes in peace. Unless something crazy happens, I doubt Kucinich will be able to gain significant traction in the polls (he’s currently at around 3%, compared to 23% for Obama and 44% for Hillary), so at this point I’m just hoping Obama wins the primary and chooses Kucinich as his running mate. Cause you know Hillary doesn’t care about anything but herself.
Oh my god, you wrote in Arial Bold, white font, in the exact same size we used to use for Ostrich Ink, my old webzine. That took me back for a moment.

I love that its not a physical tower, seeing as they represent greed and power. I also love that you can get the best view of it from anywhere you stand or sit and that the actual site of the Imagine Peace Tower is so simple yet creates a striking and powerful image.
I can see why the Nobel Peace prize was given to Al Gore, but it’s riddled with what-ifs and double standards. Al Gore is doing something -right now- about a problem. It would be awkward to hand him the prize a few years after his movie was released. There is such a need for immediacy. Therein lies the problem - should the committee award people for doing a lot of work in a short period of time or work that goes somewhat unnoticed for a large amount of time? You can say that Yoko doesn’t deserve it because she’s only an artist, but who better to give it to than an artist?
