It’s been far too long since the last Future Shipwreck podcast. I’ve fallen in love with so much good music in the interim that it was hard to narrow this playlist down to a “mere” 16 tracks. Perhaps because of that, what we’ve got on our hands here is a truly epic aural experience.

Are you having a bummer of a summer? Allow me to make a suggestion. Download “Inside Fever,” put it on your iPod, and go outside for a walk. Keep walking until you get to the end. Then take off your headphones, listen to the ambient noise of your own personal Universe, and find your way back home. Enjoy!

Track Listing:

1. Fleet Foxes - Blue Ridge Mountains
2. Arthur Russell - That’s Us/Wild Combination
3. Nite Jewel - Weak 4 Me
4. Electric Light Orchestra - Latitude 88 North
5. She & Him - I Thought I Saw Your Face Today
6. Serge Gainsbourg - Boomerang
7. Lykke Li - This Trumpet in My Head
8. Nina Simone - Suzanne
9. The Dodos - Eyelids
10. Throw Me The Statue - About to Walk
11. C.A. Quintet - I Put a Spell on You
12. Death Cab For Cutie - Your New Twin-Sized Bed
13. Tickley Feather - Lookout What’s Next
14. Animal Collective - Street Flash
15. Lee Hazlewood - A New Box of People
16. Princeton - Eminent Victorians

Right: Arthur Russell

The most popular guest-DJ duo in Future Shipwreck history is back with another installment of their renowned Tape Safari podcast! Separated by the great North American continent, no one had thought Mimi Zora– now a bona fide New Yorker– would ever return to the tropics of L.A. to unite with Aleeza Marashlian on another perilous trek through the unmapped pop culture jungle. Against all odds, the girls present to us now a triumphant new set of tunes, rescued from the callous and cold trash-heap of history.

When we last met with our courageous heroines, they had victoriously hunted through cluttered thrift stores to bring us all-but-forgotten tunes from Finnish politicians, pop chart stars of Kellogg’s Pop-Tarts, Brian Wilson, and at least one mystery keytarist. This time, we delve even deeper down the rabbit hole:

TSII was born 1/12/08 at Berda Paradise.

It was made with love.

And a dash of a a song that might be about Passover (Track 5, Hooters).

A pinch of a track about Super Nintendo (Track 3, Tobin Mori).

A fistful of great finds, like a tribute to a dead San Diego girl (Track 6, Jonathan Richman) and cable knit sweaters under suspenders (Track 2, Haircut 100).

And a feast of sense memory (Track 4, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band): YOU are running through subway sewers à la Metro, training for a tough-as-nails BMX rally; racing white stallions over hurdles as two country kids chewing hay look on; going head to head with a steam train; working at a busy pizza parlor, carrying hot pizza to the inside tables on your bike; your nemesis with a fancy new bike is good, real good–you’re about to throw in the towel–but then, you win a dance contest. That’s right. YEAH!

(Berda Paradise benefits the Hollywood free clinic, which supports love.)

After the jump, check out the complete track listing for Tape Safari II, plus some amazing excerpts of artwork the girls came across on their quest through the land of castaway cassettes!

Podcast #13: Elusive Dreams

[subscribe to the podcast in iTunes]
Right click and save to download Podcast #13 [56:57 | 65.1 mb]

Texan dance/noise rock band The Octopus Project at right, and soon-to-be household name, Rafter Roberts at left.

We begin our lucky 13th Podcast with the terrifying sounds of Judy Garland’s shattered dreams. This rare reprise of “Over The Rainbow,” which Dorothy was supposed to sing in despair after being locked up in a tower, was excised from The Wizard of Oz for its obvious creepiness. Then, from rising label Italians Do It Better, I present to you a Kate Bush cover by Chromatics. My friend Mya is obsessed with the concept of “rainbows in the dark”– a rather abstract idea to consider in terms of a musical recording– until you listen to Chromatics’ Night Drive.

Holy Ghost!’s “Hold On” is one of the danciest songs of the year, and Lee Hazlewood’s “Elusive Dreams” is the centerpiece of this mix. Only Nancy and Lee could nonchalantly throw the death of their imaginary toddler into a travelin’ song and make it work. Sufjan Steven label-mate Rafter is one of my favorite new artists, and his album Sex, Death, Cassette is sure to climb the proverbial charts in January.

At left, Jeanette Dimech is English-born, American-raised, and daughter of a Belgian-Congolese father, who somehow became a Spanish pop star. At right, the chilly yet seductive lead singer of Portland-based Italo Disco band Chromatics.

I also included a rad song from John Cale’s early solo career, that I saw Final Fantasy’s Owen Pallett cover at the Troubadour not long ago. There’s a brief excerpt from the 1989 Martika hit “Toy Soldiers”– just the good part, really– and a fresh tune from rising indie rock stars Black Kids. The podcast wraps up with new tracks from Nellie McKay, Tim Kasher side project The Good Life, and Mexican sensations Café Tacuba. To bring our journey to a close, please enjoy a loving (but sorrowful) parting thought from classic Spanish pop songstress Jeanette.

Track Listing:

1. Judy Garland - Over The Rainbow (Outtake)
2. Chromatics - Running Up That Hill
3. The Octopus Project - Mmaj
4. Holy Ghost! - Hold On
5. Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra - Elusive Dreams
6. Rafter - Casualty of BOC
7. Mùm - I Was Her Horse
8. Sébastian Tellier - Wonderafrica
9. John Cale - Paris 1919
10. Ariel Pink - The Birds They Sing In You
11. Martika - Toy Soldiers (Excerpt)
12. Black Kids - Hurricane Jane
13. Nellie McKay - Identity Theft
14. The Good Life - Keely Aimee
15. Café Tacuba - Volver A Comenzar
16. Jeanette - Oyé Papa, Oyé Mama

Sébastian Tellier, seen here working intimately on a collaboration with Daft Punk.

Podcast #12: Kyle vs. the Volcano

[subscribe to the podcast in iTunes]

For the 12th Future Shipwreck Podcast, my friend and poker buddy Kyle Buchanan takes the helm as guest DJ. Kyle is a Los Angeles-based journalist who writes for Flaunt and The Advocate. He also created the late, great Ostrich Ink, a nonfiction webzine that ran for three years and featured original work from over 75 of the city’s best young writers. When he’s not writing, Kyle is a music buff with refined tastes (as you’ll soon discover), and also hosts a weekly poker night for a unique, diverse group of nifty gay dudes. His favorite movie is Joe Versus the Volcano.

As I said to Graham while making this podcast, where other people quote “The Simpsons” throughout their daily life, I quote Joe Versus the Volcano. This undersung film (the only one ever directed by acclaimed playwright John Patrick Shanley, who has a Tony, Oscar, and Pulitzer Prize to call his own) was a stiff when it first came out in 1990, but as The Onion A.V. Club said in their feature entitled 10 Notorious Flops Worth Seeing, “If it works on you, the film conveys nothing less than the joy of being alive.” Seriously!

That said, this podcast stands on its own; if its songs are the smorgasbord, the occasional soundbites from Joe Versus the Volcano are the delicious sprinkles on top. Enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Track Listing:
1. Clinic - Hippy Death Suite
2. Joe Versus The Volcano - I Have No Response To That
3. Stephen Malkmus - Jenny & The Ess-Dog
4. The Kinks - Get Back In Line
5. Joe Versus The Volcano - I Know He Can Get The Job
6. Pop Levi - Blue Honey
7. Joe Versus The Volcano - I’m Not Arguing With You
8. The Bees - Chicken Payback
9. Los Super Elegantes - The Waves
10. Joe Versus The Volcano - This Is A Great Town
11. Brendan Benson - Let Me Roll It
12. Bob Dylan - It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry
13. Joe Versus The Volcano - Blue Moon

José Gonzalez
Track Listing:
1. Angelo Badalamenti - Just You
2. Fast Computers - Invisibility
3. Shocking Pinks - End of the World
4. Digitalism - Pogo
5. Link Wray - Fallin’ Rain
6. Yoko Ono - I Felt Like Smashing My Face in a Clear Glass Window
7. Jens Lekman - Into Eternity
8. Art Brut - Nag Nag Nag Nag Nag
9. Glass Candy - Candy Castle
10. Tobacco - Untitled (excerpt from Fucked Up Friends)
11. José Gonzalez - Down the Line
12. Beat Happening - What’s Important
13. Devendra Banhart - Shabop Shalom
14. Vampire Weekend - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa

Perhaps, like in the picture above, you live in a huge loft full of antiques. You’re chilling out with your gay lover, Franz. Imagining that’s the case, you’ll say to him, “Franz, hand me the new Future Shipwreck podcast.” You’ll relax on a Baroque chaise lounge and Franz will fold his legs on the floor beside you. While he’s flipping through Life magazine, you’ll run your hand through his hair, and the first thing you’ll hear will be a campy, haunting love song from an episode of “Twin Peaks”. That’ll be followed by a fun indie pop tune by the band Fast Computers, who hail from Portland; and a song reminiscent of early New Order by New Zealand natives Shocking Pinks.

Shocking Pinks and Fast Computers

Abruptly, you’ll transition into a melancholy dance beat by German electronic duo Digitalism, and then a world-weary folk ballad from Link Wray’s stripped-down ’70s recordings. Before you know it, you’ll be in the middle of a fun song that calls upon the 1950s– an angst-filled smash hit from Yoko Ono’s Approximately Infinite Universe. Jens Lekman won’t be too far off, with another catchy jingle from his brand new album, and then you’ll rock out to some sassy British music by Art Brut.

Link Wray, Yoko Ono and Beat Happening

Glass Candy will take you back to Digitalism’s languid dance floor, and Tobacco (of Black Moth Super Rainbow) will bridge the gap to a new recording by José Gonzalez, the Argentinian Swede renowned for his haunting acoustic guitar strumming. Indie rock hall of famers Beat Happening will play a short but sweet verse before Devendra Banhart continues the ’50s revival with a groovy cut from his brand new album. Finally, New York favorites Vampire Weekend will send you off with a sunny afro-beat-influenced rumination on Peter Gabriel.

My friend Ben from high school goes by the name Dog Tones when he’s spinning vinyl, which is quite frequently these days. Ben is the general manager of UC Davis’ radio station, KDVS, and somehow finds time to host his own show on the station, Thee Funk Terminal. When I make a podcast, all I do is lump a bunch of good songs into one big file. Ben, fancy-pants that he is, took the time to layer and sample from a plethora of sources, resulting in a truly rich aural experience. To give you some insight into the mind of Dog Tones, here is dream he had last night, starring Snoop Dogg:

I was hanging out with him at some party really late at night and he was really fucked up. I put on this beat from his album and even though he could barely stand up without wobbling around, he instantly began to rap to his song when he heard it. And he did a really dope freestyle that was amazing and reminded me of Wu Tang or something. I was just so impressed that he did a really awesome freestyle on instinct even though he obviously could barely tell what was going on.

It’s been a long journey and you’re traveling by foot. Night came sooner than you expected, and for miles all you can see are a few menacing trees waiting on endless plains. But a light up the road promises safety. It turns out to be an old Inn. “All of our rooms are vacant,” you’re told by the innkeeper. “Strange,” you say, “I’d expect at least a few travelers to come out this way.” The innkeeper shows almost no sign of interest as she shakes her weathered head.

Sunlight floods your ancient room, as you lay down for two days, three days, reading a few books, always thinking of leaving. Someone checks into the room next door. He’s a runaway ranch hand, and he teaches you all the country dances. You dance until dawn in the cracked road behind the unlikely Inn. You wake up at 3pm by the rusted swimming pool. The sight of Ruffles bag from the preceding decade convinces you that it’s finally time to leave. You pack up your books and the wicker figurine souveniers that the innkeeper has guilted you into buying, and before you go, the ranch hand kisses you and slips an unmarked CD-R into your bag. Now take a listen.

1. Hiro Yanagida - The Legend of Zelda
2. Raccoon - Quart of Oil
3. Jem & The Holograms - We Can Make a Difference
4. Scott Walker - The Seventh Seal
5. The Field Mice - Emma’s House

So my boyfriend just happens to be a superstar DJ, who goes by the name of Rudy Bleu. He’s been at it for years, playing at clubs all around L.A. Most recently, he’s been doing regular nights at The Akbar and The Eagle in Silver Lake, and at Pehrspace in Echo Park. His main project at the moment is Outré, a crazy fun dance party that he puts on with Cody Wayne.

He took time out of his busy schedule to prepare a rad new mix for the 7th Future Shipwreck podcast. Here’s what he has to say about it:

Sit back, relax, and imagine running down the hall with Angela Chase. Enjoy this musical adventure that will make you bop, pop, and sing along, even if you don’t know the language. By the time you reach the end, you’ll be riding off into the sunset with an East L.A. classic blasting from the speakers of your lowrider.

With their powers combined, Mimi and Aleeza form an indefatigable duo known only as Tape Safari! Tape Safari took a unique approach to their podcast, cultivating a cavalry of mysterious thrift store cassettes and arranging them into something at once nostalgic, foreign, and delirious.

For Podcast #4, I recruited my friend Aaron, a man of impeccable music taste, to guest DJ. We have collaborated in the past, on a photo series called Bubbles. Here’s what he has to say about his mix…

i’m so transparent: a podcast by aaron john aldorisio for future shipwreck

when young graham first asked me to do this podcast i was excited, but without focus. ever the last minute man, i was frantically pulling songs from my itunes minutes before i had to leave for my date at black diamond. on the ride over to mount washington i checked out the jams i had just compiled and realized that this seemingly random hodgepodge of music actually sorta jived with the frame of mind i’ve been in recently.

see, i’ve got this job i love but it doesn’t pay very much. also, i don’t get any paid vacation days until after i’ve been there for one full year. the thing that kinda sucks about all this is that i’ve really been wanting to travel lately. no money + no vacation time = no trips for me. it struck me, however, that the artists in this here podcast sorta reflect the various places my mind has been wandering to lately. a sleazy dance club in copenhagen, a hippie commune in big sur, the streets of tokyo, the beaches of brazil, the midwest, soho, glasgow, stockholm…you get the drift.

either way, the assortment of tunes here is completely all over the place, but i hope you enjoy traveling vicariously through them as much as i do. i guess it’s kinda like a road trip but for your soul or your mind or something. whatever. just dig it.

Greetings to the people of cyberspace. I’ve been working a lot lately, whoring myself out for the patriarchy on Bratz: The Movie, partying with a bunch of bland white kids and The Black Eyed Peas for Pepsi and Doritos, and facing extreme temperatures for Rob Zombie’s blasphemous remake of Halloween. The downside to all that surreal nonsense is that I’ve hardly had time to update my blog! Well, I come bearing an offering of apology to my dear readers in the form of a brand new podcast. March 3rd The annual Pisces Party is going down at Black Diamond, a.k.a. my house. It’s a veritable happening ensured to freak out even the most jaded of partygoers. My craft-happy roommates have been busy for weeks working on the elaborate decorations.

At our last party, Alexis Arquette ended up blowing some random boy (and later, herself) in the video confessional booth.

March 4th Rudy and Jeppe’s monthly night Break-A-Way at the Akbar in Silver Lake. This month it’s a party for a new periodical entitled “Daddy The Magazine”. Come and get free t-shirts and magazines! Yay!
March 14th Dr. Dog plays the Troubadour in West Hollywood with Bobby Bare Jr. and Jeffrey Lewis. P.S. Their new album, We All Belong, came out yesterday. Check it out!
March 24th Outré, Rudy’s new monthly event with Cody Wayne, premieres at a downtown gallery called Pehrspace. Less dance party and more of a unique and unpredictable night with performances of all kinds, Outré will hella knock your socks off.
